AIR CONDITIONING

Air Conditioning

What type of air conditioning system is best suited for my home?

When the time comes to buy an air conditioner, it is sometimes difficult to make a choice given the wide range of products currently on the market.

If you choose a central air conditioner, without ducts or a heat pump, a specialized air conditioning contractor will help you determine which type of unit is best suited to your residence and your comfort needs.

The following appliances are available on the market

  • Ductless Air Conditioner:

Easy to install, the ductless air conditioner is suitable for any type of residence: condo, bungalow, cottage. A single unit can air-condition the entire living area.

  • Ductless Heat Pump:

Affordable and easy to install, the ductless heat pump is the ideal unit for homeowners who don't have a central system in their home but still want year-round comfort.

  • Central Air Conditioning:

Very efficient, the central air conditioner evenly tempers all the rooms in the house. However, it requires the installation of air ducts.

  • Heat Pump (Central Type):

A heat pump offers year-round comfort: air conditioning in summer and heating in winter. It also requires the installation of air ducts. A high-efficiency heat pump can offer significant savings in heating costs.

  • Window Air Conditioner:

A smart option if you are a tenant or if you are planning to move. Very efficient and quiet, it can be installed in most existing windows.

  • Air Conditioner Through the Wall:

If you live in a place where there is a box in the wall (Sleeve), you can install an air conditioner through it. This one is designed to give an optimal performance.

  • Mobile or Portable Air Conditioner:

Ideal for small apartments, garages, or any small area to be tempered, most of these air conditioners are equipped with casters, allowing you to easily move them to any room in need of air conditioning.

  • What is Inverter Technology?

The Inverter technology allows to modulate the operation of the air conditioner in order to always maintain a uniform temperature. This electronic module allows the unit to reach the desired temperature more quickly while keeping it constant by varying the intensity of compressor operation. The result is a considerable reduction in the number of compressor stops/starts, a more stable ambient temperature, substantial energy savings and a longer service life of the unit.

  • How long does an air conditioner last?

Most air conditioners without ducts or central units have an average life of 15 years. However, there can be determining factors that can cause variations: the quality of the installation and regular maintenance are the best guarantees for a long life.

  • Air Conditioner Maintenance

Seasonal maintenance of air conditioners is strongly recommended: the efficiency, proper operation and durability of the unit depend heavily on proper maintenance.

Refer to our Maintenance page for more details.

  • Where can I install a ductless air conditioner?

Ductless air conditioners are easy to install. If you own a condo or a bungalow-style single-family home, it is advisable to install the indoor unit in the most central room of the house. In the case of a cottage, the top of the stairwell is the most appropriate location. The units should always be installed as close to the ceiling as possible so that they can handle the hot air that accumulates there.

  • What is the difference between R-22 and R-410 refrigerants?

HFCF-22 refrigerant is a product containing a chlorine molecule and is harmful to the ozone layer. As of January 2010, it will be prohibited to manufacture or import new appliances containing this refrigerant in Canada. However, HFCF-22 will remain available until 2020 for servicing appliances.

The vast majority of manufacturers now use HFC-410A in the production of their air conditioners. This refrigerant has about the same efficiency as R-22, but is considered a more environmentally friendly product because it is less harmful to the ozone layer.

  • What is SEER?

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It’s an energy efficiency measure that evaluates the energy consumed by the appliance in relation to the energy output.

The higher the SEER, the more efficient the appliance. A more efficient appliance consumes less electricity for the same amount of power.

  • Can I buy a ductless air conditioner and install it myself?

    No!

Whether it is a central air conditioner, ductless or heat pump type, the unit must absolutely be installed by a specialized air conditioning contractor who has all the skills required for this type of installation. Their technical knowledge will ensure an adequate and safe installation, a good life span and optimal operation of your unit.

In addition, no manufacturer will respect the warranty if the unit has not been installed by a certified contractor.
